You voted, and the multiverse answered. The official theme of the $2,500 Viddy Jam is Portal Problems: step through a door, ruin your life.
It was a crowded ballot. Monster Crush brought the forbidden romance crowd, Kiss or Kill had the thriller fans, and Choose the Villain nearly stole the whole thing (fitting). But in the end, the community picked the theme with the most room to get weird. Sci-fi, fantasy, romance, horror, comedy: everything fits through a portal.
So What Counts as a Portal?
More than you think. If your character can't easily walk back through it, it counts:
A glowing doorway to another realm. The classic. Never misses.
A thrift-store mirror where your reflection is a half-second late.
A subway stop that isn't on any map. The conductor knows your name.
A group chat invite from a number with too many digits.
An elevator button below the basement. It's warm down there.
Falling asleep in your bed and waking up in the timeline where you texted back.
And remember: the theme has two halves. Portal gets your character somewhere new. Problems is why we keep watching. Don't just show us a cool other world — show us the deal they shouldn't have made, the version of themselves who's better at their life, the door that was one-way the whole time.
Ideas to Steal
Stuck? Take one of these!
The Commute: She's caught the 7:42 every day for three years. Today it didn't stop at her station. Or any station. And the other passengers look relieved.
Roommate from Elsewhere: The new roommate pays rent early, does the dishes, and definitely came out of the hallway closet that used to be two feet deep. Best roommate she's ever had. That's the problem.
Return Policy: He swapped lives with his parallel self for a week. Week's up. His parallel self isn't answering the door. Either door.
The Family Business: Grandma's basement door was always locked, and nobody asked why. Grandma's gone now. Something down there has read the will.
Out of Office: He walked through the wrong conference room door and became the prophesied king of a dying realm. He has 200 unread emails and a performance review Thursday.

$2,500 prize pool: Five placements decided by community vote, plus a $300 Editor's Pick. Full breakdown in the kickoff post. (US residents only for prize money.)
Use the Head Start
The Making Window doesn't open until July 10, which means you have a week to plot. Use it. Sketch your premise, figure out your cliffhangers, and decide what your portal costs the person who steps through. The creators who show up on day one with a plan will lap the ones who start prompting cold.
The portal is open. What's on the other side is up to you.
